IPL vs Pico Laser for Underarms. Which One Wins?
Hair removal, whitening, or both? Here's the no-fluff breakdown of IPL vs Pico Laser for underarms, and why most of our clients end up doing the combo.

If you've Googled underarm treatment in the Philippines, you've hit a wall of conflicting claims: IPL is faster but less effective. Pico is laser-grade but pricier. The combo session is the secret weapon. So which actually works?
Here's the honest comparison, based on what we actually run for clients at Whiten Premier Westborough.
What IPL actually is
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light, broad-spectrum light energy that targets melanin in the hair follicle. Heat damages the follicle, slowing or stopping regrowth. After 6–10 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, most clients see ~80–90% reduction.
IPL is gentler than laser, faster to apply (a session takes 10–15 minutes for both underarms), and works well across larger areas. Its limit: it doesn't penetrate as deep as Pico, so it's mostly about hair, with only modest whitening effect.
What Pico Laser actually is
Pico fires pulses in picoseconds, a trillionth of a second, at specific wavelengths. The ultra-short pulses shatter melanin pigment into microscopic dust that your immune system clears over the following weeks. The result: lighter, more even-toned skin.
Pico is the gold standard for pigmentation: melasma, sun spots, freckles, and yes, dark underarms. It does almost nothing for hair on its own, that's not its job.
So: hair, whitening, or both?
If your underarm concern is mostly hair: IPL alone, 6+1 or 10+3 package. ₱779 per single session at Whiten Premier, one of the lowest entry points in the area.
If your concern is darkness with smooth hair already: Pico alone, 6+1 package. The discolouration was likely from friction, deodorant residue, or post-shaving irritation, all of which Pico clears in 4–6 sessions.
If both, like most clients, you want the **IPL + Pico Laser combo**. ₱2,799 a single session, or 6+1 at ₱16,794. One booking, both devices, half the total time vs running them separately.
Real cost comparison
IPL underarms (10+3 = 13 sessions): ₱7,790, total over ~6 months for ~80% hair reduction.
Pico underarms (6+1 = 7 sessions): roughly ₱2,599 × 6 + 1 free ≈ ₱15,594, over ~3 months for visible brightening.
Combo (6+1 = 7 sessions): ₱16,794, over ~3 months, both effects, single booking.
The combo wins for 80% of our clients on total time invested. It's the most-booked package on our menu.
Before-and-after expectations
Honest answer: 1 session won't change much for either device. The whole protocol is built on cumulative damage to follicles (for IPL) and gradual pigment clearance (for Pico).
Realistic timeline: visible difference after session 3. Clear, even-toned result after session 6. Maintenance every 6 months keeps it locked in.
What to do before booking
Shave 12–24 hours before the session, never wax or pluck for 4 weeks prior. Avoid tanning the underarm area for 2 weeks. Skip deodorant the day of your session. Show up with bare, clean skin.
After: cool the area, no hot showers for 12 hours, and SPF if your underarms see sun (yes, beach trips count).
Frequently asked
Is it painful?+
IPL feels like a quick rubber-band snap with a cooling tip. Pico is slightly more intense, a hot tap-tap pattern. Most clients rate both 3/10 on pain. No numbing needed for underarms.
Can I do laser if I tan?+
Not at peak tan. Both IPL and Pico target melanin, too much skin melanin and the device can't safely distinguish skin from target. We ask for 2 weeks no-tan before sessions.
Will the hair come back?+
About 80–90% of follicles stay dormant after a full protocol. Hormonal shifts (pregnancy, PCOS) can wake some up. We recommend a maintenance session every 6–12 months.
